Box Top Collection

Dear CPE I Parents,

We are collecting Box Tops to raise money for our school!

What are Box Tops for Education?

They are part of a program called Box Tops for Education, whereby people can earn cash for their child's school by clipping Box Tops coupons from participating products and submitting them to the school.  Each coupon is worth $.10.  The more we collect, the more money we can earn for our school programs, so please look for them on the products that you buy!  For more information, you can check out the website:

Please send them in to your child's teacher or drop them off in the designated box in the library no later than Monday, October 22nd!

Thanks, Jen Prada (Sonia/Catlin's and Gavin/Yvonne's)

You Can Pay Your Lunch Fees Online

MyLunchMoney is the nation's leading site for updating and managing your student's lunchroom expenses. Introduced nearly 10 years ago, it was the first online prepayment system for school meals, allowing parents to say goodbye to sending cash and checks to the school cafeteria. In our secure environment, parents can prepay for student meals using credit/debit cards, view current account balances, set up recurring payments when the account reaches a low balance threshold, view student meal purchases, and set spending limits. Parents love it for its ease and convenience!

please visit to pay your lunchroom expenses or to sign up.

CPE1 Garden - By Donnie

Spring has sprung in the CPE courtyard garden! Flowers, from bulbs the kids planted last fall, are blooming: daffodils, tulips, iris, and more.

Classes have begun planting early greens. Two classes (Catlin/Sarah and Marilyn) started seedlings indoors over a month ago and transplanted them into their garden beds these last two weeks. They planted: kale (an all around favorite), bok choi, tat soi, mizuna (Japanese) spinach, and various lettuces. They and other classes have direct seeded early greens and other plants into their beds these last two weeks as well. Beds now include: radishes, carrots, lettuce varieties, kale, sugar snap peas, beans, more bok choi and tat soi and mizuna.

I moved the large bushes that were in the vegetable beds. A few into the ground bed in the courtyard, and the rest into the beds on 106th St. Take a look. The front of the school looks better already.

With really warmer weather (beginning of May) we'll plant our summer veggies: tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, CORN!, basil, and more. We'd love some help with watering. We need a good supply of bamboo stakes. Please remind your children, that tasting/eating is done by the children in the classrooms that have done the planting.

Happy Spring!

Seeking Donations For Our School's Upcoming Raffle

Dear Neighbor,

We invite you to make a difference in the lives of New York City school children in your community. The Parents’ Association at Central Park East 1 elementary school is actively seeking donations for our upcoming raffle to be held on May 3rd at the school in East Harlem.

As you consider the many requests for donations that come your way, know that your support of this event will have results – your business will get great exposure and you will be helping a great school to grow and thrive.

CPE 1 is one of New York’s oldest and most respected elementary schools. As I am sure you have heard, NYC public schools are facing severe budget cuts and we are hoping to raise funds to help keep vital programs and services alive at our school. Any donation is most appreciated!

I have attached the donation form that we are using this year. You can keep the lower half for your record. A letter for the winner, with details about obtaining the membership, can be forwarded in the enclosed envelope and addressed to the attention of the CPE1 Parents’ Association.

We really appreciate your support. Thank you!

Warm regards,

Gigi Verkaik. 2012 Raffle Chair -- Attached is a raffle donation form and a sample "ask" letter.
