CPE1: Central Park East 1 Elementary School

Students have a 25-minute lunch period and a 25-minute recess period. Some younger grade PreK/K/1 classes eat in their classroom. The teacher will inform you if your child is in a class that goes to the lunchroom or not. The lunchroom is staffed but CPE relies on parent volunteers to provide additional help. Parents are strongly encouraged to assist at lunch and recess whenever they can, whether regularly or occasionally. The younger children need help learning the system, washing their hand ns opening their containers. Older kids benefit too from the presence of additional adults. It is a good opportunity for parents to get to know a lot of kids fast and to become a familiar face. Parents need to remember that this is not their social time. Parents need to be available to all children if they are to volunteer effectively.

During good weather, recess is held in the big yard. When surfaces are wet or frozen, recess takes place in the veranda (grades 3-5) or the gym. The lower school has outdoor time 1-2 times a day at the 107th St. playground. Here, again, parent participation is essential and appreciated.
